The Major of

Chinese Language and Literature

 

Our target

To endow learners with talents in the literary theory and knowledge of the Chinese language and literature so that they can get employed in such institutions as cultural affairs, press and publication, colleges or universities, scientific research as well as enterprises, and engage in literary criticism, teaching of and research in Chinese language and literature, and cultural publication.

 

Our requirement

Leraners of our major are expected

--- to have a fundamental knowledge of the Chinese language and literature, both ancient and modern;

--- to receive a systematic and specific training in the historical development of literary theory and criticism, both in and beyond China , along with the principles and methods applied in these fields;

--- to get aquainted with the fundamental knowledge and recent advancement pertaining to these fields;

--- to be aware of the policies and regulations concerning language, literature and art;

--- to be able to utilize methods or techniques used in perusal, retrieval and reference of classical literature;

--- to have good competence in using a foreign language and a good knowledge of social sciences and humanities; and

--- to be equipped with fundamental capability in carrying out professional research work, including literary criticism and appreciation, and practical writing.

More specifically, graduates of the major shall

--- to have a good knowledge of the fundamental theories of Marxism, and theories of language and culture;

--- to have good capabilities in writing and oral expression;

--- to be able to analyse and comment on literary work, and read popular Wenyan, or ancient Chinese writings; and

--- to be acquainted with the current development and tendency of linguitic and literary research, and have some capability in carrying out relevant research work.

 

Course design

Major courses: ancient Chinese language, modern Chinese language, general linguistics, literary theory, ancient Chinese literature, historical development of modern Chinese literature, historical development of contemporary Chinese literature, historical development of foreign literature, Chinese writing, aesthetics, Marxist literary criticism, western literary criticism, Chinese ancient literary criticism.

Occupational practice: terminal paper writing, BA thesis writing and other practical work.

 

Credit requirement

The learners are required to fulfill 155 credits, of which

47 credits are for fundamental courses,

47 credits for (discipline) core courses,

10 credits for (discipline) direction courses,

12 credits of general courses,

24 credits for elective courses, and

15 credits for occupational practice.

 

Druration  4 years, or 8 semesters

The Major of

Drama, Cinema, Television and Literature

 

Our target

To train talents in literature pertaining to drama, broadcasting, cinema and television, i.e. to endow the learners, through four years of regular study, with knowledge and capablilities in drama, broadcasting, cinema and television, such as the fundamental theories, script writing and the creation, design and criticism of drama, broadcasting, cinema and television, so that the graduates can engage in such employment as mass media, press or publication, teaching and research, administration of cultural and artistic affairs.

 

Our requirement

Leraners of this major are expected to get to know the fundamental principles and theories concerning drama, broadcasting, cinema and television and how to apply them to practical work, get acquainted with the policies and regulations concerning the cultural and artistic administration in China, as well as the development and operation of the art and industry of drama, broadcasting cinema and television, both at home and abroad, gain a systematic knowledge of the histories, concepts and principles in relevant disciplines, along with the knowledge about script writing, and technology, operation and management demanded in relevant industries, and then be able to do such work as script writing, artistic critic, and editing, design and creation of drama, broadcasting cinema and television.

More specifically, graduates of the major will be able

--- to have knowledge of the basic concepts and principles in drama, broadcasting, cinema and television;

--- to have elementary capabilities in composition and criticism in the field of drama, broadcasting, cinema and television;

--- to be aquainted with the guidelines, policies and regulations pertaining to drama, broadcasting, cinema and television;

--- to be aware of the development and tendency of the global drama, cinema, telsvision and broadcasting, both as a literary medium and a cultural industry;

--- to utilize methods or techniques of literature perusal, retrieval and reference, or possess some competence in relevant research worm; and

--- to be equipped with fundamental capability in planning, operation, organization and administration of cultural affairs, both as an art and an industry.

 

Course design

Mainline courses include: history of Chinese cinema, history of the world cinema, audiovisual media, a general study of drama, a general study of broadcasting and television, a general study of cameracature, aesthetics in cinema, Western film in China, directing of cinema and television, criticism in cinema and television, understanding cinema, script wriitng, photography and camera shooting, montage and film editing, TV program design, television culture, cinema industry and  marketing.

Occupational practice includes: 1) practical courses of photograph taking, camera shooting, montage and design; 2) terminal paper writing, BA thesis writing and other practical work.

 

Credit requirement

Graduates from the major are required to fulfill 155 credits, of which

49 credits are for fundamental courses,

40 credits for (discipline) core courses,

22 credits for (discipline) directional courses,

12 credits of general courses,

17 credits for elective courses, and

no less than 15 credits for occupational practice.

The Major of

Teaching Chinese as a Second Langauge (TCSL)

 

Our target

To endow learners with talents in teaching Chinese as a second language, knowledge of both the Chinese and English language and culture, and capabilities in applying them so that they will be able to engage in bilingual and practical employment such as teaching Chinese as a second language and international exchange in cultural institutions both within and without China.

 

Our requirement

Leraners of this major are expected

--- to gain some fundamental knowledge of the Chinese language, literature and culture, the English or Japanese language and literature, comparative literature, international cultural exchange, intercultural communication, and teaching Chinese as a second language;

--- to acquire capabilities in handling ancient and modern Chinese lierature, as well as English literature, understanding and analysing literary work within and without China, and engaging in teaching Chinese as a second language and international communication;

--- to know the common ways of classroom teaching, testing and assessment, and frequently-used methods of data collecting, thesis writing, action research and language pedagogy;

--- to receive systematic education and training in the fundamentals of relevant disciplines;

--- get acquainted with the historical development and current tendency of relevant disciplines;

--- to have good knowledge of the policies and regulations in China pertaining to foreign affairs;

--- to possess capabilities in bilingual communication and practical work (TCSL), and

--- to equip themselves with awareness of initiation, spirit of cooperation and national pride, along with wholesome personality, sound mentality and aesthetic quality.

More specifically, graduates of the major shall

--- to have a good knowledge of the fundamental theories of Marxism, China’s foreign policies and laws and regulations pertaingin to foreign affairs;

--- to be well acquainted with the language and culture of both Chinese and English, as well as the fundamental theories of TCSL, so that they have good capabilities in using both languages, speaking and writing in particular, and in teaching Chinese as a second language;

--- to be quite aware of the traditional Chinese culture, and the cultural traditions of the major English-speaking countries as well as of Japan so that then possess capabilities in inerpersonal and intercultural communication, and popularization of the Chinese culture;

--- to be able to engage in action research of TCSOL, as well as research work in the field of language and culture;

--- to reach the English level of CET-6,

--- to pass Band 2 of the national test for computer; and

--- to arrive at the Putonghua (Mandarin Chinese) Level A-.

 

Course design

Major courses: theories and methodologies in TCSOL, modern Chinese language, ancient Chinese language, introduction to linguistics, Chinese literature, foreign literature, a general intruduction of the Chinese chulture, Western culture and etiquette, introduction to English-speaking countries, intercultural communication, English speaking and reading, a contrastive study of the English and Chinese language, Chinese and English writing, and a third language.

Occupational practice: 1) internship in TCSL; 2) skill training in Chinese culture and field study of the cultures of the four ancient Chinese dynasties; and 3) terminal paper writing, BA thesis writing and other practical work.
